This panel features new and upcoming writers with host Dr. Noreen Golfman and songwriters with CBC’s Jamie Fitzpatrick. In a twist this year, new voices will include Bob Hallett of the Great Big Sea Band and Jamie Fitzpatrick of CBC’s The Performance Hour.
Pamela and Daniel will discuss their songwriting with Jamie Fitzpatrick.

Novelist Bernice Morgan, archivist Bert Riggs and historian Dr. Nancy Earle will talk about the writings of Cassie Brown. The session will be about all three of her disaster books: Death on the Ice (Bernice Morgan); The Winter’s Tale (Nancy Earle) and Standing into Danger (Bert Riggs). Each of the panelists will read from one of the books as indicated above and then discuss her legacy and influence on future writers.

The Royal Canadian Legion will be hosting its famous fish dinner. Two seatings: 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. This is an independent event.
Summary: Oil and Water is Artistic Fraud’s theatrical retelling of the incredible true story of Lanier Phillips. Shipwrecked aboard the USS Truxton in 1942, Mr. Phillips was the only African American survivor. What happened to this son of the racially segregated south at the hands of the residents of the nearby town of St. Lawrence forever altered his world, and became a legendary story that still resonates with power 70 years later. Artistic Fraud’s concert production features an a capella score by Andrew Craig that blends the Newfoundland folk tradition with African American gospel.

Winterset in Summer at Terra Nova National Park
Terra Nova National Park and Winterset in Summer are partnering from August 6th to August 9th to hold reading workshops with award-winning children’s writer, Maxine Trottier, at the Children’s Activity Centre at Newman Sound Campground.
Maxine Trottier is a prolific writer of books for young people. Born in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan on May 3, 1950, she moved to Windsor, Ontario in Canada with her family ten years later. In 1974 she became a Canadian citizen. She is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario.
Maxine spent 31 years working as an educator in elementary classrooms, guiding children toward literacy. The students in her class, who of course thought of her only as their teacher, saw each step in the creation of a new work. They heard the unillustrated story, saw the roughs, and were the first to view the finished book.
Maxine lives with her husband William and their Yorkie, Moon, at Newman’s Cove, Newfoundland. Her studio overlooks the Atlantic Ocean; it is a wonderful place to write.
Maxine’s latest book is Migrant, 2011, and was published by Groundwood Books (House of Anansi).
