“Flight and its Allegories”

The Festival begins on Thursday, August 8th in Gander. The Airport Authority has given permission to hold an event in the celebrated International Departure Lounge. Known as a nearly perfectly preserved 1959 gem it is widely considered to be one of the most important Modernist rooms in Canada. The lounge is home to Kenneth Lochhead’s mural, “Flight and Its Allegories”. Writer Jane Urquhart used the mural as inspiration for her book The Night Stages. Jane will read from The Night Stages and The Rooms Curator, Mireille Eagan, will provide an interpretation of the mural.Jazz musicians Al Henderson and Florian Hoefner will provide musical entertainment for this event.

Paul Rowe will lead a discussion with the creative team of Jillian Keiley and Robert Chafe. This duo has been collaborating on innovative and creative work since their first project: In Your Dreams Freud in 1995. Since that time, their theatre company, Artistic Fraud has become one of Newfoundland’s foremost theatre companies. They specialize in large scale chorus-based work where spectacle meets story. Wayne Johnston will also be joining the panel for what will surely be a captivating discussion.

“Lady Cove Women’s Choir in Concert”

Performing regularly to sold-out audiences, Lady Cove has garnered a national and international reputation for excellence, not only for its high level of performance but also for its innovation and creativity. The concert will include the premiere of a commissioned Beothuk-themed composition by St. John’s native Kathleen Allan (composer, conductor, soprano), inspired by Bernice Morgan’s Cloud of Bone.

The venue for this concert is Holy Cross Church, Eastport. This wooden church with its high vaulted ceilings and wonderful acoustics is the perfect location to enjoy this very special concert.

Local writer Elisabeth de Mariaffi will read from her first thriller, “The Devil You Know”. Catherine Hogan Safer will join her reading from her collection of short stories, “Wild Pieces”. This session is facilitated by Eleanor Dawson.

Regrettably Will Ferguson is unable to be in attendance at the 2016 festival. Russell Wangersky, a Giller nominee, will be joining the Giller Voices panel. Russell’s attendance will broaden the scope of the discussions as Russell and Giller award winners Lynn Coady (Hellgoing), and Elizabeth Hay (Late Nights on Air) chat with host Anthony Germain about their writing lives, their passion for the written word, the impact of being nominated for or winning big literary awards and the pressures of writing in the spotlight.

Summary: Oil and Water is Artistic Fraud’s theatrical retelling of the incredible true story of Lanier Phillips. Shipwrecked aboard the USS Truxton in 1942, Mr. Phillips was the only African American survivor. What happened to this son of the racially segregated south at the hands of the residents of the nearby town of St. Lawrence forever altered his world, and became a legendary story that still resonates with power 70 years later. Artistic Fraud’s concert production features an a capella score by Andrew Craig that blends the Newfoundland folk tradition with African American gospel.

“February”

To commemorate its 10th anniversary the Festival commissioned Lisa Moore to adapt her internationally-acclaimed novel February for the stage. Today, in partnership with Rising Tide Theatre Company, we are pleased to present an exciting preview of this work. The performance will open with a short dialogue between Lisa and Michael Enright in which they will discuss the challenges and adventure of her adaptation of February. Rising Tide Theatre will then present a dramatized reading, with theatrical effects, of the newly-minted script. Following the performance, the audience will be able to interact with the actors and the playwright in a discussion on how the novel works as a play. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to gain insight into the process of going from “page” to “stage”.

“2009 Crafting Voices”

The writers cover three different time periods and points of view on the matter of Newfoundland joining the Canadian Confederation. Dohaney was born before Confederation and lived through the referendum battles of 1948. Johnston was born in the 1950s, less than a decade after Confederation, while Butler grew up in the post-Smallwood years in the 1970s and 1980s. They will read from one or more of their books that cover the Confederation period and engage in a discussion with Enright on the perspectives of writing about Newfoundland before and after Confederation and writing about Newfoundland living there and living in another province of Canada

“2009 What if Voices – “Missed Opportunities for Newfoundland”

The writers have conducted research and written about three different periods when Newfoundland had an opportunity to become part of Canada: 1867-1869 (Gwyn), 1890s (Hiller) and 1909 (Roberts). They will discuss why Newfoundland did not enter the Canadian at those times and engage in a general discussion with Budgell on this subject.

Set amid the intriguing backdrop of a long held conspiracy theory that Britan and Canada were in cahoots with Joey to make sure that Britan was rid of us, and Canada, and not the United States, got us. Patriotic speeches, larger-than-life characters, a plot that Sherlock Holmes would love, and a chance to vote. It’s a grand old rally and a battle some say was never won.
