From August 5-8, WIS again partnered with Terra Nova National Park in a Children’s Writer in the Park Outreach event for 2019. Additionally, the writer hosts an afternoon event in Eastport. The 2019 writer in residence was Jennifer Morgan.
“It was June 1919 and a real live Vickers Vimy bomber was parked in the field behind Ralphie’s house. But when Mr. Alcock and Mr. Brown were finally ready, everyone took off running. That’s when Ralphie, slowed down by his limp and cane, thought he would miss out on the most important event of his young life…”
Jennifer Morgan is a storyteller, illustrator, and printmaker from St. John’s. At 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6th she’ll be telling her family story about her great-uncle Ralph Moyst. This story is based on the chapter book by her father, George M. Morgan: “Alcock and Brown and the Boy in The Middle” (Tuckamore, 1994) which Jennifer illustrated.
Jennifer also lead a walk looking for flat things in nature, then participants made a cyanotype photographs from their discoveries. These photographs create a blue outline of the silhouetted object. Cyanotypes are a good activity for all ages.

The books that followed have garnered numerous awards, including The Mr. Christie Award for There Were Monkeys in My Kitchen and the Anne Connor Brimer Award for Mable Murple. If You Could Wear my Sneakers, a book on Children’s Rights commissioned by UNICEF won both the Ontario Silver Birch Award and Atlantic Hackmatack award. Author readings have taken her to Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Belize and Mexico. Currently, she is Honorary Spokesperson for the New Brunswick Coalition for Literacy. The coalition recently initiated the Sheree Fitch Adult Learner Scholarships. She is also Honorary Spokesperson for the Nova Scotia Read to Me Program. This program provides literacy information to new parents and books for newborns. Each year she sponsors a writing competition for New Brunswick Youth. Her latest venture in literacy education includes completing a three year (summer) writer in residency for Somebody’s Daughter – out on the tundra in Nunavut. This is an innovative program for Inuit women started by Bernadette Dean, Sheree’s friend and former student from a writing workshop Fitch held during one of her sojourns to the north. In May 2005, Fitch’s first novel (ages ten and up), The Gravesavers, was published by Doubleday Canada Random House. A coming of age story blended with a historical event – the wreck of S.S. Atlantic in 1873 – Fitch considers the novel “a kind of love letter” to her Maritime home and a celebration of her roots. Oil and Water is Artistic Fraud’s theatrical retelling of the incredible true story of Lanier Phillips. Shipwrecked aboard the USS Truxton in 1942, Mr. Phillips was the only African American survivor. What happened to this son of the racially segregated south at the hands of the residents of the nearby town of St. Lawrence forever altered his world, and became a legendary story that still resonates with power 70 years later. Artistic Fraud’s concert production features an a capella score by Andrew Craig that blends the Newfoundland folk tradition with African American gospel.

Winterset in Summer at Terra Nova National Park
Terra Nova National Park and Winterset in Summer are partnering from August 6th to August 9th to hold reading workshops with award-winning children’s writer, Maxine Trottier, at the Children’s Activity Centre at Newman Sound Campground.
Maxine Trottier is a prolific writer of books for young people. Born in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan on May 3, 1950, she moved to Windsor, Ontario in Canada with her family ten years later. In 1974 she became a Canadian citizen. She is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario.
Maxine spent 31 years working as an educator in elementary classrooms, guiding children toward literacy. The students in her class, who of course thought of her only as their teacher, saw each step in the creation of a new work. They heard the unillustrated story, saw the roughs, and were the first to view the finished book.
Maxine lives with her husband William and their Yorkie, Moon, at Newman’s Cove, Newfoundland. Her studio overlooks the Atlantic Ocean; it is a wonderful place to write.
Maxine’s latest book is Migrant, 2011, and was published by Groundwood Books (House of Anansi).

The performance will open with a short dialogue between Lisa and Michael Enright in which they will discuss the challenges and adventure of her adaptation of February. Rising Tide Theatre will then present a dramatized reading, with theatrical effects, of the newly-minted script. Following the performance, the audience will be able to interact with the actors and the playwright in a discussion on how the novel works as a play. Winterset in Summer at Terra Nova National Park
Terra Nova National Park and Winterset in Summer are partnering on August 10th to hold a reading & writing session with children’s writer, Marion Quinton Brake of Gander. The session will be held at 10 a.m. at the activity centre in the park. In the afternoon Marion will hold a second session at 1:30 p.m. at the Eastport Kids’ Day Camp.
Marion was born in Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, to a large family, being the middle child of 12. She continues to live there with her husband, Brian. They have two boys, Tim and Simon.
Marion worked over 20 years at James Paton Memorial Hospital, the last 14 years as library technician. She resigned in May 2007 to pursue her writing and other interests such as taking care of her horses, pets, and gardening. She has a diploma in library studies, gardening/landscaping, and animal sciences. Marion also feels strongly about environmental issues. She lives a very active lifestyle and is very creative. Dabbling in a little homebased business with compost and garden tea, horse rides, etc., her husband constantly tells her that she is a “make-work” project–make work for him, that is!
As a teenager Marion knew that one day she would want to write. It would be one way of expressing her creative side. She believes that things happen in your life when they are supposed to and when her father died unexpectedly, writing really helped her through that difficult time. She enjoys writing very much and plans on continuing even though she admits self-publishing to be very hard work.
Publications
A Horse Named Lady is a children’s picture book about a horse that is very unhappy living with her new owner, Mr Snipe. Mr Snipe is a grouchy old man who treats Lady poorly and makes her work very hard. She never has any time to relax and graze with the other horses. But this all changed the day she met Simon, a boy who loved horses and always wanted a horse of his own.
In the newly released sequel, Lady’s Big Surprise, it has been more than a year since Simon’s parents surprised him for his birthday with his first horse, “Lady”. Lady has been very happy and healthy and hardly ever thinks about her previous owner, Mr Snipe, who treated her poorly. She loves helping Simon with his chores and hanging out with his friends. One morning, however, Simon wakes up to a big surprise which could change everything.
Uncle Joe and Sally–It’s OK to be Different is a delightful fictional rabbit story that deals with verbal bullying in a light hearted way. It also shows the possible consequences of lying and losing your temper. Story lessons are included as well as activity suggestions. This book includes a “lucky” wooden rabbit ear, Good Deed Diary and Pledge which will surely help motivate children to living more caring and helpful lives. Upon completion of their Good Deed Diary, they can email for their own E-Congratulations Certificate to frame.
This story takes place in a pet shop in the small town of Trinity in Newfoundland and Labrador. Tim, who has recently moved to Trinity with his family, has taken quite a liking to two rabbits that look a little different. When he hears some of the visiting children ridiculing the rabbits he becomes angry. Mr. Anstey, the pet shop owner, who also overhears the comments, decides to take action.
Forthcoming publications
Lady & Magnum–Oh What Trouble!!: Most days were quite normal in Paunch. Nothing much out of the ordinary usually happened. Sundays were typically a quiet day, a day of rest. Simon and his friend Jeremy were planning to go fishing. That was before horses Lady and Magnum were seen galloping up the road. Simon could not believe the news when Jeremy’s brother, Zachary, ran to tell him. He had just put them out to graze about ten minutes previous while he cleaned the barn and was sure he hooked the latch. As crowds started to gather, a sense of panic and perhaps excitement could be felt. Simon needed to get them back safely and without anyone getting hurt. Fishing would have to wait!

“2009 Dramatic Voices”
“Peter’s Other War” by Brian Downey. Inspired by Tom Cahill’s play “The Gallant Major”
Two of the most colourful and spell-binding leaders of their time, Joey Smallwood and Major Peter Cashin, battle it out for Newfoundland’s future on the floor of the National Convention. Will responsible government by returned as promised by Britan in 1934 or will the fiercely independent Newfoundland join Canada? Set amid the intriguing backdrop of a long held conspiracy theory that Britan and Canada were in cahoots with Joey to make sure that Britan was rid of us, and Canada, and not the United States, got us. Patriotic speeches, larger-than-life characters, a plot that Sherlock Holmes would love, and a chance to vote. It’s a grand old rally and a battle some say was never won.
