Winterset in Summer 2025: A Sneak Peek into This Year’s Festival.

It’s time for our annual Festival, and we are coming with an exciting list of writers and hosts.

This summer we will be featuring some of your favourite writers. Jane Urquhart returns to the festival having recently been short-listed for her terrific novel, In Winter I get Up at Night. Award-winning writer and Canada Reads champion Heather O’Neill will be accompanied by her daughter Arizona O’Neill. Beloved retired CBC host Ted Blades will talk to them about their fruitful collaboration on their soon-to-released serial novel, Valentine in Montreal.

Lisa Moore and Jack Whalen are long-list finalists for their Invisible Prisons non-fiction work, and they will be interviewed by none other than CBC host par excellence, Eleanor Wachtel. Writer Marjorie Doyle will host a session with some of the finalists, and Angela Antle will talk to the winner of the BMO Winterset fiction award. This year we are pleased to feature well known playwright, comedian, writer, performer Lorne Elliott (one half of the team FREE BEER) for what is sure to be a highly entertaining Friday evening. You’ll want to get tickets early for that!

You might have noticed that Breakwater Books has become a major force in the literary works in this province, producing first-class writers, new and emerging. We want to show off some of these highly talented writers and so we are delighted to be presenting a panel with Monica Kidd, Willow Kean, and Rod Moody-Corbett hosted by Noreen Golfman.

Because of the huge success of Lisa Moore’s on-site writing workshop last year, we are repeating the experiment. Lisa will vet and mentor a group of applicants lucky enough to attend her workshops on Friday and Saturday mornings. On Sunday morning that group will present their creative accomplishments in a free session open to the public hosted by Jennifer Guy.

Indeed, everyone is always interested in how the creative process works, and this festival we are showcasing two exceptional writers and teachers of creative writing, Tamas Dobozy and Gerard Collins. They will be engaged in conversation in turn with Aaron Tucker, himself a wonderful writer and recently hired English professor at Memorial University.

Watch this space for an in depth program after April 10 and tickets will go on sale
by May 1.

We can’t wait to welcome you back to Winterset in Summer this year! Get ready for an incredible festival filled with unforgettable stories, engaging conversations, and a celebration of literature. Stay tuned—there’s so much more to come!
