2009 - Barbara DoranIsland Voices

Newfoundland-based director and producer Barbara Doran has produced or directed over 20 films, including Joey Smallwood: Between Scoundrels and Saints (1999) a compelling biography of the man who brought Newfoundland into confederation. Her short film A Harbour Symphony (1991) was in official competition at Cannes. The Perfect Hero, (Bronze, Columbus International Festival, 1999) explores the world of romance novels. Her latest film with the NFB is the 2003 The Man Who Studies Murder. Doran produced her first dramatic series, the eight-hour international co-production Random Passage. The saga of a group of exiles in a Newfoundland outport in the early 1800s drew huge ratings when it first aired on CBC-TV in early 2002 and won two Gemini awards.
