2017 Festival Program
Winterset in Summer is Newfoundland and Labrador's unique literary festival designed to celebrate the writers of our splendid province. Meet new and established authors and hear them talk about their writing with celebrity hosts. The 2017 festival will showcase both local and national writers and performing artists.
Winterset in Summer Literary Festival 2017 will be held August 10-13th at the Beaches Arts & Heritage Centre in Eastport, Newfoundland. While the first scheduled panel discussion for the festival occurs at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 11, a special viewing of the film documentary "The River of My Dreams" on the life of Gordon Pinsent has been scheduled for Thursday, August 10th at 8 p.m.
As always Winterset in Summer 2017 will deliver the top notch program our regular patrons have come to expect. We will begin on Friday afternoon with acclaimed authors Anakana Schofield, Esi Edugyan, and Elisabeth de Mariaffi. Expand your imagination with Science Fiction authors Kenneth Tam, Janet McNaughton and Susan MacDonald. Join Bert Riggs, Bill Rowe, and Ron Crocker as they take a look at the life of Joseph Smallwood. The 2016 “BMO Winterset Award Voices”, always an audience favorite, welcomes Robert Chafe, Michael Crummey and Paul Rowe. Emerging song writers, Nick Earle and Joseph Coffin, share the experience of breaking into the arts scene in Newfoundland and Labrador. Experience a nature walk with botanist and author Todd Boland and join Jennifer Morgan, Dawn Baker and Kathy Sweetapple for an interactive Colouring Book session. Hear Elisabeth de Mariaffi and Catherine Hogan Safer read at a lunch time reading presentation. Reminisce with Paul Dean, Mary Fearon and Dave Paddon as they enthrall attendees with their unique observations and experiences in this insightful and amusing Storytelling event. These sessions, masterfully hosted by Ramona Dearing, Mack Furlong, Anne Budgell, Jamie Fitzpatrick, Catherine Hogan Safer, Michael Enright and Chris Brookes, will surely be as informative as they are entertaining. The program finale presents the “Lady Cove Women’s Choir in Concert”. This choir, known nationally and internationally for their excellence, will include the premiere of a commissioned Beothuk-themed composition by Kathleen Allan inspired by Bernice Morgan’s “Cloud of Bones”.
